Age reverse - hair

As we age, we may find that our hair is not as thick as it was when we were younger.  Please note however that some medical conditions cause hair loss and you should therefore check with your doctor if you experience excessive hair loss.  There are several natural things you can do to fight hair loss due to aging however, starting by nourishing your hair from the inside.  Exercise boosts circulation and this brings oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicle.  On the yoga blog I have posted a sequence that will bring more oxygen into your body to nourish your hair, wring out any toxins that cause hair to be in poor condition and uses inversions and forward bends to bring nutrients to the hair.  Please see my 'sister' blog -'Youth boost yoga-skin and hair'.

Of course, what you eat matters too.  Your hair is composed mainly of keratin which is a protein and so your diet should include enough to replace hair that has fallen out (it is normal to lose around 100 hairs each day).  Please see ‘The vegan diet and protein’.  Omega 3 is vital too because it strengthens the hair follicles. Vegan supplements are from marine algae. The antioxidants and minerals, zinc and selenium are essential for repair and stimulating the sebaceous glands at the base of the hair to produce sebum which creates lustrous locks!  If you are vegan be especially careful that you get enough B12 as this is necessary to form the red blood cells which deliver oxygen to the hair.  Please see ‘Supplements for vegans-iron and vitamin B12’.  Other nutrients that help include silica (found in oats, soya beans, sunflower seeds etc), calcium, copper, iron and magnesium.

Massage will boost circulation to the scalp.  I like to use almond oil or coconut oil (about 2 tbsp) and add 5 drops lavender (calms inflammation) and 5 drops geranium (boosts circulation).  Caster oil is also good to use as it stimulates dormant hair follicles. You could also substitute either of these for tea tree essential oil which unclogs blocked sebaceous glands and so prevents hair becoming brittle or rosemary essential oil. Dip your fingertips into the oil and massage your scalp with circular movements.  Finish by running your fingers through your hair from front to back.

Other tips :–

  • Reduce stress which creates tension which in turn reduces circulation to the scalp.
  • Do not brush your hair when it is wet – use a wide tooth comb.  Don’t frazzle your hair by having the hairdryer on a high setting.
  • Be careful if you wear your hair up a lot. If the hair is pulled tight, it can weaken the hair follicles on the hairline resulting in hair loss.
  • Don’t smoke – it reduces circulation to the scalp
  • Avoid shampoos with SLS (sodium laureth  sulphate) which can cause the hair to break.
  • Look for natural shampoos that contain biotin, caffeine, niacin or collagen to reduce fallout and thicken hair.
